NIJAC is inviting applications for the office of fee paid Legal Chairman of the Care Tribunal Northern Ireland.


The Care Tribunal hears and considers appeals against decisions prohibiting or restricting the employment of individuals teaching or caring for children or vulnerable adults and decisions concerning the registration of social workers. The Care Tribunal also hears appeals against decisions relating to the regulation of residential care homes, nursing homes, children’s homes, nursing agencies and independent health care providers and, when so provided by legislation, other care services.
 

It is intended to make one appointment and to maintain a reserve list for 12 months (but no more than 15 months from the published anticipated appointment date (27 June 2025).
 

Eligibility:
To be eligible for appointment as a Legal Chairman of the Care Tribunal is to, by the anticipated date of appointment, 27 June 2025 be:

  • a member of the Bar of Northern Ireland of at least ten years’ standing, or;
  • a solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland of at least ten years’ standing


Section 107 (1) of the Judicature (NI) Act 1978 provides for the aggregation of years’ standing for holding office of solicitors who have been barristers, and vice versa.
