FAQs

The Society has a thorough and an effective complaints process please click here to make a complaint.

Please note that the Society will not respond to emails which are either a complaint or which seek advice on a specific issue - all complaints must follow the complaints procedure, including being in writing and supported by a postal address and an original signature.

If you have a legal query you need to consult with your own solicitor or simply click here to find a solicitor.

The Society is not a legal advice centre and therefore cannot offer legal advice of a specific or general nature.

Solicitors that specialise in immigration matters can be found on our directory, here.

The Society does not deal with visa issues or provide legal advice.

For further queries you can contact http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/visas-immigration/

Further Immigration Guidance from LSNI

The Law Society of Northern Ireland as the governing body of the solicitors' profession in Northern Ireland has in exercise of its statutory powers, prescribed the legal education and training necessary to qualify as a solicitor in Northern Ireland. There are several routes into the profession which are detailed on the below page.

Learn more about Becoming a Solicitor

Solicitors are members of that branch of the legal profession whose services consist of advising clients, representing them before the lower courts and preparing cases for barristers to try in the higher courts.

Learn more about working with solicitors

Legal aid helps people who can't afford to pay for legal advice or representation in court by a solicitor or barrister. Your advocate applies for this for you therefore. You may wish to refer to the NI Direct Website on Legal aid: https://www.nidirect.gov.uk/articles/legal-aid

For any enquiries about wills or deeds you should contact your Solicitor.
If your solicitor is located outside of Northern Ireland ask them to contact LSNI at enquiry@lawsoc-ni.org

The current directory only contains those solicitors in private practice. If you cannot find the contact details of an individual solicitor or a solicitors' firm within the Solicitors' Directory or you need to check the professional details of an individual solicitor please contact the Society by emailing records@lawsoc-ni.org

Solicitors can choose to display their contact details on our directory. The Directory, however, is not a copy of the Register of Solicitors and is not comprehensive.

If you cannot find the contact details of an individual solicitor or a solicitors' firm within the Solicitors' Directory or you need to check the professional details of an individual solicitor please contact the Society by emailing records@lawsoc-ni.org.

Most guides and leaflets published by us are available to download from the relevant area of the website.

For more information on books and journals that we publish please see the Book and Journal Sales part of the website. This will also provide payment and collection options.

If you are unable to find a publication in these areas please contact enquiries@lawsoc-ni.org.

You can also visit our Digital Magazine: The Writ.

Admission is the legal term for the process by which an individual, in this case as a trainee solicitor, is formally admitted as a solicitor of the Court of Judicature of Northern Ireland and included on the Roll of Solicitors in Northern Ireland (“the Roll”).

Please note that, only upon formal admission to the Roll, may an individual use the professional title of ‘solicitor’.
