The Law Society of Northern Ireland (LSNI) is proud to share the results of a groundbreaking report, "The Value of Legal Aid," which underscores the vital role legal aid plays in ensuring justice and fairness in society. Conducted by Rocket Science, this study employs a Social Return on Investment (SROI) approach to quantify the social, economic, and environmental impacts of legal aid. The findings are timely, highlighting the essential benefits generated by legal aid amidst increasing challenges and pressures in the justice system.

Key Findings

Economic Value: For every £1 invested in legal aid, up to £8.32 of social value is generated.

  • Family legal aid: £3.62 of social value per £1 invested.
  • Civil (non-family) legal aid: £4.55 per £1.
  • Criminal legal aid: £12.71 per £1.

Broad Impact:

  • 71% of benefits accrue directly to clients and their families.
  • 16% benefit public services, including social services and the police.
  • 13% improve outcomes in the criminal justice system.

Approach and Scope

The study assessed cases across three key areas of legal aid—family, civil non-family, and criminal law—covering April 2021 to December 2023. Data was collected through a combination of stakeholder consultations and a survey of over 340 solicitors, supplemented by wider evidence from literature. Key outcomes identified include improved financial situations, enhanced quality of life, and prevention of deeper social issues such as family breakdowns and criminal convictions.

Why This Matters

Legal aid has profound ripple effects that extend far beyond the courtroom, touching schools, workplaces, and entire communities. By preventing deeper social problems such as homelessness and child custody disputes, legal aid not only changes lives but also delivers significant cost savings to the public sector. Despite this, the report highlights gaps in understanding and appreciating the full value of legal aid, emphasizing the importance of proper funding and support to maintain its critical services.

Moving Forward

This report provides a compelling case for viewing legal aid as a vital investment in Northern Ireland’s social and economic well-being. The Law Society calls on policymakers, stakeholders, and legal practitioners to act on these findings to safeguard and strengthen legal aid services.
