This session will focus on strokes and vascular disease and, specifically, presenting symptoms, diagnosis and the importance of timely treatment in the prevention of injury.
Professor Ganesh Subramanian - will present on the management and treatment of all forms of stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) across the whole patient pathway, (i.e.diagnosis, investigation, acute treatment, rehabilitation and re-integration, secondary prevention and long-term complications.
Professor Greg Fulton – will present on the role of the vascular surgeon in the treatment and prevention of strokes.
Professor Ganesh Subramanian is a Consultant Stroke Physician based in Nottingham. Since attaining his CCST in 2002, Professor Subramanian has been employed as a Consultant in general, stroke and geriatric medicine, including cerebrovascular disease. He is involved in the management of all forms of stroke and transient ischaemic attack (TIA) across the whole patient pathway (i.e., diagnosis, investigation, acute treatment, rehabilitation and re-integration, secondary prevention and long-term complications).
Prof Subramanian is the Regional Clinical Director for Stroke in the East Midlands (since 2020). He was the Chair of the Clinical Advisory Group for Stroke in the East Midlands region (since 2016 - 2020) and is a member of CVD steering group. He led the development of Mechanical Thrombectomy pathway for East Midlands as well as the deployment of artificial intelligence (AI) software for stroke imaging regionally.
He is one of the select few peer-reviewer of stroke services in the UK.
He is a Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Nottingham and leads the final year of medicine undergraduate course. He is a Visiting Professor at Saveetha Medical College in India since 2019.
Prof Subramanian writes reports for both claimants and defendants (roughly 60/40 split); he also produces reports for CPS/Police. He produces around 100 reports a year.
Professor Greg Fulton is a native of Belfast, Co Antrim graduated in medicine from Trinity College Dublin in 1990 with an Honours in Surgery. He did his early postgraduate training in Ireland, gaining his Fellowship of The Royal College of Surgeons of Ireland in 1994. After a 2-Year Research Fellowship at Duke University, Durham, North Carolina, USA, he was awarded an MD thesis by Trinity College Dublin and in 1997, Greg went on to the Irish Higher Surgical Training Program, and was awarded an Intercollegiate Fellowship in 2000. He completed an International Fellowship in Endovascular Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, Cleveland, Ohio, USA in 2002. He began his current post as Consultant Vascular Surgeon at Cork University Hospital, Cork, Ireland in 2003, and was also appointed to the Staff of the Bon Secours Hospital Cork in 2010. He is Chair of the Department of Surgery and Clinical Lead in Vascular Surgery at Cork University Hospital.
