Former President and current Council member of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, Eileen Ewing has paid tribute to her long-time friend and family law colleague, Judith Brown who sadly passed away last week.
Speaking in advance of Judith's funeral Mrs Ewing said:
"Judith dedicated her life to her family, friends and to the solicitor profession. She served her apprenticeship in Trevor Smyth Solicitors, Belfast, where she met her husband Alan Brown also a solicitor. It was love at first sight, they got engaged 3 months after meeting, marrying on 6 March 1982.
Judith continued to work in Trevor Smyth Solicitors after qualifying until the birth of her first child Dani. When Judith returned to work after her maternity leave, she decided to work alongside Alan in a new practice he had setup on the Newtownards Road, Belfast in August 1985.
The practice was very busy, but it wasn't long until her second child Michael was born in May 1988.
Despite being a busy mother, Judith remained committed to the solicitor profession and helping others, serving as the Chair of the Board of Parents Advice Centre (now Parenting NI) for 4 years in the late 1990s.
She was also the Chair of Condico Solicitors for Children, which she setup alongside colleagues following the introduction of the Children N.I. Order 1995, which aimed to ensure children subject of court proceedings received the best representation possible.
She was also a member of the Steering Group who introduced Collaborative Law into NI and as Chairperson of the Collaborative Law Association represented Northern Ireland along with three other colleagues in 2006 at a worldwide conference in San Diego.
If that wasn't enough, she was a member of the Guardian Ad Litem Children's Order Panel from its inception.
Her commitment to the solicitor profession continued serving as she did on the Law Society's Family Law and the Access to Justice Committee, working tirelessly on behalf of members of the legal profession.
Her knowledge and commitment to family law earned her the respect of colleagues and her popularity was attributable to her wicked sense of humour and her never ending support of colleagues.
Her passing whilst deeply sad also provides us with a moment to reflect on a life which was dedicated to the solicitor profession and to her family.
Her service and commitment cannot be underscored enough, nor can we ever forget the love and friendship she gave to all who knew her."
Judith's daughter Dani and son Michael, as well as the extended family, would like to thank all of those who have sent messages of condolences and support to them at this very sad time.
FUNERAL ARRANGEMENTS
- The funeral Service will take place on Wednesday 6th March at 1pm in James Brown and Sons Funeral Home, 300 Newtownards Road, Belfast, BT4 1HF.
- Committal will follow in Lisburn New Cemetery Extension.
