The Law Society of Northern Ireland hosted a sold-out event on Friday 7 March to mark International Women’s Day which focused on the official theme of ‘Accelerating Action’. The event brought together professionals from across the legal profession, at various stages in their career to celebrate progress and discuss ongoing challenges.

Law Society President Colin Mitchell opened the event by emphasising the importance of promoting gender equality within the legal profession. A compelling keynote address was then delivered by Madam Justice McBride, who shared key challenges she had faced within her career and how she overcame them.

Following the keynote address, a panel discussion chaired by Brigid Napier, explored overcoming obstacles and key lessons learned. The panel featured Natasha Adamson (Adamson Rice), Louise Crilly (Departmental Solicitor) and HHJ Bagnall (County Court Judge). The panellists shared personal insights into their professional journeys, offering advice on resilience, leadership, and the importance of support networks in their careers.

Attendees then had an opportunity to hear from Margaret Magennis, a retired solicitor, who reflected on the difficulties of achieving gender equality, describing it as ‘a hard mountain to climb’.

A major milestone of the event was the official launch of a new Women’s Network, led by Brigid Napier. This initiative aims to provide a dedicated platform for women in the profession to connect, share experiences, access support and build essential skills.

The afternoon concluded with a networking and drinks reception, offering attendees an opportunity to connect and continue discussions in an informal setting.

The launch of the Women’s Network marks a tangible step forward in ‘Accelerating Action’, ensuring that action continues beyond this event. The Society looks forward to sharing details of its upcoming events programme and seeing the Network grow in the year ahead.
