Justice Minister Naomi Long and Legal Academia Leader Address Women’s Leadership Event at Law Society House

Today the Law Society of Northern Ireland hosted the first Women’s Network event since its official launch, "Overcoming Challenges Throughout a Career into Female Leadership", at its Law Society House in Belfast. The event, which drew legal professionals from across the jurisdiction, focused on the experiences of women navigating leadership roles in law and public service.

The panel featured two leading voices in the field: Justice Minister Naomi Long MLA and Professor Esther McGuinness, Head of the School of Law at Ulster University. The discussion was chaired by Claire McAleer, Chair of the Women’s Network, who facilitated an open and engaging conversation on overcoming systemic and cultural barriers to leadership.

Held in the Lecture Hall at Law Society House, the event aimed to inspire and empower women in the legal profession by spotlighting the stories of those who have forged successful leadership paths, often in the face of significant adversity.
President of the Law Society of Northern Ireland, Colin Mitchell welcomed attendees and praised the initiative, stating:

“Today’s event is a powerful reminder of the importance of representation and support for women at all stages of their legal careers. The Law Society is proud to champion a culture where leadership is inclusive, and where the barriers that have historically limited progression are actively challenged. Our Women’s Network plays a vital role in fostering that progress, and I commend everyone involved in delivering such a meaningful discussion today.”

Speaking at the event, Minister Long reflected on her own journey into political leadership, highlighting the importance of resilience, visibility, and mentorship for women striving to lead. Professor McGuinness spoke to the challenges and rewards of academic leadership and the role legal education can play in shaping an inclusive profession.

The event also provided attendees with the opportunity to connect with peers, share experiences, and engage in meaningful discussion about structural change, allyship, and leadership development.

This marks a significant milestone for the Women’s Network and the Law Society’s continued commitment to supporting gender equity and inclusive leadership across the legal sector.
